The Family

I have this whole Idea of this family existing in a world based on Greek Mythology... Could be fun.

I was trying to keep things bright... I may continue to refine these, but for now on to other things

Some of what I've been working on as of late.  Three very different moments from Earthling:  The introduction of the villain, the middle of the third act, and a scene from the very end (The woman on the right of the third is the girl in the second, all grown up).

Jules is followed

All grown up

My characters for my thesis are all pretty near done in terms of design, color, etc.... I updated the painting of the girl, adjusting the colors and shadows, and while working on production paintings I realized I needed to design whet she looked like old.  So here it is.

And here is her father, the leader of her tribe...  Their cloths are based on the Himba people in northern Namibia, and Eskimo (hence the boots and pants)

Red Sneakers

I was trying out some pencil brushes in photoshop, and took it a bit farther than I had intentionally planned.  I wanted to draw a little kid... this is what came out.

Space Redux

Way back in 2008 I made a drawing... I liked it at the time, and spent a bit of time in photoshop coloring it (mostly just flat colors)

Fast forward to 2013 and as a warm up to another digital painting I decided to add some shadows and highlights to that same drawing.  I wouldn't have been able to get the image anywhere near this if i had spent a week working on it back then... Progress!

The Shaman

Here is the development for the villain of my thesis, The Shaman.  His design is partially based on a cuttle fish and a cockroach.  In the story his people live inside a volcano, and are brought into contact with Jules (the monkey) and the forest tribe because they find his ship crashed near their city.

Mother

I imagine her name (or at least nickname) is Maddie.  Her design had to go through the most development to get it to where I was happy with it.  I'd say I need to add a little texture to the whole family before it is truly done, but for now...  also the full line up of the whole family.

Thesis Design

So I suppose It is about time to start showing some of the development of my thesis.  The story is about  a space monkey that crashes on an alien planet and for the first time in his life has is free. It is ultimately about what is home. I'll start off with the girl (she has no name yet) who is the first person he befriends on the alien planet...

I'm still tweaking the shadows here and there, and will possible try out same costume changes, but for now here is her final design.

Here are the various different stages I went through to get to what is the final design

When I was sketching out the poses and doing the turn around her long hair was a nightmare to figure out.  It was either a pain to figure out interesting flow/shapes for the hair, or it covered the pose/ruined the silhouette.  So I gave her a "haircut" and immediately liked it much better.

The kids

You can probably guess who the mother is off of these...  The son is a whole lot less saturated than the daughter, and I'm not sure which way I prefer yet.  I may do some color adjustments later, but for now here they are.  Up next is the mom

Father

Being that I am in the middle of my thesis, and working on a collaborative project (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/curpigeon-3d-animated-short) I still need to do something different in the middle of it all to keep myself from burning out on projects and deadlines... So here are a few sketches (one not so much a sketch as a finished character design) I've done on the past couple weeks.

 This guy is part of a family of monsters I designed.  I think I'm going to try to give each member this treatment over the next few weeks.

Knife Girl

Just trying out some now photoshop techniques... new to me at least.  Nothing to complicated, it was more a different process than anything else .  I could probably refine this a bit more, but I think I'm going to leave it as it.

Character Design... Continued
